2018-12-30: All-nighter
Time for an “all-nighter,” then to Shanghai at 8am.
I woke up at 6pm and am writing this at 5am. I planned to get to sleep at midnight in order to catch some sleep before the train, but my circadian clock didn’t play nice and I couldn’t fall asleep. So it’s time to down some tea and energy drinks, then spend a long day in Shanghai and hopefully end it around midnight. This means compulsively googling stuff like “effects of sleep withdrawal,” “longest you’ve ever been asleep reddit,” and wikipedia binges even though I’ve done this all before.
Besides finishing binge-watching It’s Always Sunny in Philidelphia I’ve been working on the write-up of my street. Some research has been done into the history of this road I live on (南阴阳营, or South Yin Yang Barracks) and it looks like the northern version of the street (北阴阳营, or North Yin Yang Barracks) is where the oldest remains of civilization were found in Nanjing. There’s a museum nearby that street which I’ll check out when I’m back from Shanghai. These kinds of factoids really drive home how old the land I’m living in is.
I’m looking into learning Hangul since it seems easy enough since it’s a constructed language. But I’m worrying that there are too many of these little side-projects going on, what I should do is focus on doing one thing really good (like Chinese!) instead of “wasting time” on many little things.
Chess
Beat the coorespondance with a nice checkmate. They blundered a queen so I don’t feel too good about it. Still waiting on them to accept my rematch!
Stuff I’m Liking
- Things I don’t Know as of 2018: A nice piece by a talented programmer in the React/Redux space that was making the rounds on HN and lobste.rs about how a talented dev doesn’t know everything. Also another example on how maybe I should learn one thing well rather than a bit of knowledge in different areas!
