2019-01-14: Classical Chinese

Machine Learning

I’m taking a break from this for a while. Any gains I begin to make in this field don’t really match up with what I’m trying to do for my career (devops, backend development, sales, etc.) and without a background in statistics I don’t think it’s worth this time.

Chinese

I’m working through a 文言文 textbook. The language is similar but still much different than Mandarin. It’s sort of like Classical Latin was to the roman empire – A common language for official writing and communication between cultures that spoke different languages.

The characters I understand for the most part. But the grammar is very ambiguous and contextual. But at least I’m more motivated with this than ML.

Chess

As I said yesterday, taking a break from this until Friday.

Hugo

The automatically-generated list of journal entries that I’m envisioning is a bit harder than expected. This is because while you can put templating on main pages and partial components, I’m having a harder time making a custom page that would contain the templating based on hugo’s model of the website. For example, it’s easy enough to put this list onto the side of the homepage, but creating a separate page (for example site.com/journal-list) to my knowledge is only possible as markdown rather than something allowing you to template. 30 minutes of research brought up that I could maybe make a section page, (ie site.com/journal) but that’s not really what I want.
